Are you a movie buff? Ever thought of how much money a box-office movie can get? Here are the five too movies that have earned the biggest amount of money so far.
1. AVATAR
Taking more than five years of making, Avatar gained world wide at tention as the first 3D and 4D movie when it was eventually released in December 2009. Directed and written by award-winner director James Cameron, the movie was praised as a breakthrough in cinematic technology and awarded three Oscars for Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, and Best Art Direction in 2010. Set in the 22nd century, Avatar revolves around Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a disabled ex-marine who was assigned to infiltrate Na'vi (the native creatures of Pandora moon) and persuade them to allow mining attempts by humans in their homeland.
2. TITANIC
The tragic incident of a sunken ship, an ill-fated love story, and James Cameron (yes, the same great man who directed and wrote Avatar) all combined together in Titanic. Released in 1997, this movie suddenly got media attention as the most expensive film ever made at the time. Though it was inspired by a real life incident, Titanic focuses on the fictional love story between Leonardo DiCaprio (Jack Dawson) and Kate Winslet (Rose DeWitt Bukater), who fell in love during the voyage and got separated by death. The film attracted millions of moviegoers and won two Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director.
3. THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
Based on a fantasy trilogy written by J.R.RTolkien, The Return of the King was the last movie of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The series took eight years of making, which was done entirely in New Zealand (the native country of the director, Peter Jackson). The film was set in a fictional world called Middle Earth, and followed the journey of a young hobbit, Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), and his fellowship to destroy the One Ring before The Dark Lord Sauron got hold of it.
4. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST
Released in 2006, the film was sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003). Directed by Gore Verbinski, the film took less than a year of filming and required the fantastic budget of $225 million. It won an Academy Award for Visual Effects. The film is about the journey of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Kninghtley), and Captain Jack Sparrow (Johny Depp). They must deal with infamous Captain Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) and Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander)
5. TOY STORY 3
The third film of the Toy Story series, Toy Story 3 was released in 2010, qiute long after its predecessor, Toy Story 2 (1999) came out. Nevertheless, Toy Story 3 still attracted lots of loyal fans and grossed $41 million on the first day and $109 million in three days. It surpassed all movies produced by Pixar. Besides financial success, it also won Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. Directed by Lee Unkrich, Toy Story 3 will focuses on Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) and other toys that belong to Andy.
